Understanding Probate

• For estates with a Will, executors require a Grant of Probate to distribute assets and handle administration
• In cases without a Will, next of kin need Letters of Administration to manage the estate under intestacy laws
• We can act as professional executors if you prefer not to take on this responsibility

Our Service

Led by Sadhana Joshi, with over 30 years of experience, our team handles both simple and complex estates. We charge £250 per hour plus VAT, with standard communications charged at £25 plus VAT.

Timescales and Costs

Estate administration typically takes 6 months to 3 years, with costs ranging from £2,000 to £15,000 plus VAT and disbursements. Additional costs may include probate fees (£300), statutory notices, and inheritance tax where applicable.

Please note that in addition to professional fees there are likely to be other charges payable, known as disbursements, which we handle on your behalf to ensure a smoother process, and which are payable to third parties, including, for example

Inheritance tax payable – https://www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax

Fees to obtain necessary documents, such as the death certificate, additional copies of the grant, documents detailing accounts and assets held

Grant of Probate application fee – £300 and £1.50 per copy

Land Registry search fee – £3 per property

Bankruptcy search fee – £2 per beneficiary

Placing Statutory Notices in The London Gazette and a local newspaper – this protects executors against unexpected claims from unknown creditors. TBC but typically in excess of £500 + 20% VAT

We will provide you with the best possible information about the likely overall cost, both at the time of engagement and when appropriate as the matter progresses.
